The Remoteless app on your iPhone (iPad or iPod touch) talks to a helper program on your computer. The helper program in turn talks to Spotify on your computer. This is why you need to download and install the HELPER on your computer.

Spotify does not provide any official way to be controlled remotely, so the biggest challenge has been to create the helper program and in make a useful remote control within the constraints present.

User Manual

Here we touch upon most features of Remoteless and anytime we write iPhone we mean iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch.

Initial Connection

1. Make sure you have installed SpotifyRemotelessHelper on the computer with Spotify.
2. Make sure the computer and the iPhone is on the same wireless network
3. Tap the “New”-button on the initial screen in Remoteless and the computer should automatically appear.
4. Tap the computer name and type in the number provided in the window that pops-up on your computer.

Sometimes this will not work because of firewalls etc, and then you will need to make a manual connection.

Music Navigation

Search

1. Enter a name of a band, an album or a song
2. Filter your result with the bottom tab-bar.
3. Tap any search result to browse it.

Browsing

• While browsing an artist you have the option to browse an album, or to play all songs from that artist.
• While browsing an album you have the option to play all tracks, to go to the artist of the album, or to browse a single track.
• While browsing a track you have the option to play that track or to browse album or artist.
• To get back to currently playing, just tap upper left button and you get there in less then 5 taps.

Favorites

Add favorites by tapping “Add favorites”-button in the lower left corner while browsing artists, albums or songs.

Playlist

It is possible to start a playlist from Spotify Remoteless, but the playlist must manually be added to the favorites. We cannot communicate with Spotify nativly and this prohibits us from showing syncing playlists between Spotify and Remoteless amongst other things.

1. Tap “Playlist”-tab in the bottom right corner of the “Favorites” screen.
2. Enter a valid Spotify playlist URI (should start with spotify:user:).
3. Enter a name for your playlist.

The playlist will then be added to your favorites and you can listen to it just as you listen to any other music from Spotify Remoteless.

Twitter

Over the repeat button in the currently playing screen, there is a small twitter button. Enter twitter username and password, and the current song will be twittered like: “Listening to: XXX (via http://remoteless.no #iphone #spotify #remote)”

Facebook

Over the repeat button in the currently playing screen, there is a small facebook button. Enter facebook username and password, and the current song will be published to your facebook wall.

Manual Connection

To connect to a computer running Spotify trough a firewall etc. choose “Setup manual connection” at the botton of the “New Connection” screen.

A manual connection requires that you know the IP-address (check wiki how for instructions) for your computer, and that this address is available from your device. Do not change the port if you are not a qualified geek

This feature can also be user to control Spotify from an iPod that is on a different wireless network, thus waking up your roommate from work by turning on the music.

Regional filtering

In Spotify, different music is available in different regions. Spotify Remoteless is by default matching your iPhone’s location and normally this matches your Spotify region. If you however use a norwegian iPhone in Spain, you need to tap the “Country:XX” button on the welcome screen and align Remoteless and Spotify’s region.
